A few weeks ago The Smoking Gun broke a story about Rick Ross supposedly being a former corrections officer in Florida, which is not a good look for a rapper by any stretch. Since then, as is the norm in this day and age, a whole bunch of people have gone hard with Photoshop and done up some pretty crack up cop movie poster remakes and other shit. I’ve uploaded a couple of my faves to see here, but for a bunch more check out this blog.
*Remember Carl? I forgot all about that bastard ’til I saw this one.
Haha man I love these shits. My boy Jay linked me this up today, it’s one of those vids where a song is synched up to a cartoon (or puppets in this case), and all sorts of funny things match up and hilarity ensues. This one here is Bert & Ernie “performing” M.O.P‘s banger Ante Up. After the jump are two more essentials of the genre.
I’m gonna assume a lot of you good folks out there are net savvy enough to have the new Nas album, “Untitled”, so what’s your thoughts on it so far?
I still haven’t had enough time to properly digest the whole thing, but on current impressions it feels like a near 5-micer to me, with the potential to be a classic (yeah I said it) – especially if it sparks something of a revolution in the current hip hop climate from dancing to thinking. I had doubts whether Nas could carry the ‘nigger’ concept for a whole album, but I think he’s largely achieved it and in the process kicks some real knowledge and gives listeners a lot of food for thought. Tracks like America, Sly Fox and Black President provoked more thinking in me than maybe any other songs I’ve ever heard. Aside from the political and social commentary, and his ability to stick to the theme (most of the time at least), it was also awesome – and a relief – that the beats are on point too. Breathe, Y’all My Niggas, Testify and Untitled are the shit I’m jamming the most on that front. The track with Game and Chris Brown, Make the World Go Round, sounds slightly outta place, but should make a good follow up single to Hero (see vid down bottom). I’m a Nas fan so I could be biased, but so far overall I reckon Untitled is the shit. It’s grown folks music: mature and intelligent, with a conscience and a dope sound. Agree or disagree?
Oh and sorry for no album link, don’t wanna risk getting Shot Then shut, shut ‘em down, but it’s outta our hands if it ends up in the comments section
Not sure how late I am on this song, but I only just heard it today when I watched the recently released video for it. The shit is real laidback, reminiscent of Lauryn Hill during the Miseducation era right down to the reggae-tinged beat. Doing some quick Googling, Jazmine Sullivan is originally from Philly and has been in the game for a few years now, working with Salaam Remi, Jack Splash, Missy Elliot (like on this track) and Floetry amongst others. If this song is anything to go by, I’ll definitely be keeping an ear out for her future stuff. Peep the vid below.
Yesterday’s match between the Warriors and Wests Tigers marked Ruben Wiki‘s 300th game in the NRL and I just wanna give props to one of league’s greatest ever players and to quote Tofiga on Off Work, “a role models in the gommunity”. The game yesterday was a fitting way to mark the occasion because the venue, Leichardt Oval, was where Wiki made his debut for Canberra (with their U-23s) and the coach of Wests, Tim Sheens, was Wiki’s coach at the Raiders when he first started. Since his early days with the Green Machine, Wiki has gone on to achieve a lot. He has the record for the world’s most capped test player (55), is the most capped NZer in the NRL (300*), is only the 10th player ever to play 300 NRL games and 1st Kiwi, was part of the 24-0 tri-series hiding of Australia, won a premiership with the Raiders in ’94, has captained his country and club, was named in the all-time Kiwi team, and was made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit for his services to rugby league. As well as his achievements on the field, Wiki has been a role model off it, renowned as an all-round good guy and inspiration to young Polynesian players in the NRL, and has been involved in anti-violence and healthy eating campaigns to name just a few. Personally I’ve always looked up to Ruben Wiki, and along with Tana Umaga, he’s made me proud to be Samoan, even if I am only 1/4. So yeah, shot Ruben, congratulations on the feat and I hope your teammates can get you into the playoffs in your final NRL season because you deserve better than a 12th place finish!
This song is all over the blog scene, but I felt it necessary to share on our own site for those that might miss it. This is some pretty powerful stuff from the man Nas on the possibility of Barack Obama becoming the US’ first black president. Throw in some uplifting Obama quotes and a ‘Pac sample for the hook and this track’s a winner. I know Nas isn’t always the most effective at getting his point across, but he manages to on this for the most part. Have a listen below or download here.
And if you have a link to the Green Lantern mixtape this is from, hook it up in the comments section.
Some of you cool guys in the know might have already been aware of this but Mary J Blige is to perform in Auckland (at Vector Arena) and Wellington (at the Town Hall) in June. Pretty mean. I wonder if she’d be able to pack out Vector? I could imagine a lot of old heads turning up and I know I’ll be there. NZ Herald link here.
On a related note, what’s up with this supposed Boyz II Men concert in Auckland? The man Slick told me about it, but I can’t find any tickets for sale as yet.
The Kangaroos team was named on Sunday and holy fuck their backline is mean. Every player is dangerous and it’s gonna be damage control for our backs. Thankfully their forwards are average though and just a bunch of dirty cunts really (there should be at least one fight with Gallen in their side). Even though we’re AGAIN tryna scratch a team together because of injuries and UK-based players being held back by their clubs, I’m an eternal optimist when it comes to Kiwi league and I think this is the team we could cause an upset with:
Fullback: Sam Perrett (Roosters) Wing: Jason Nightingale (Dragons) Centre: Iosia Soliola (Roosters) Centre: Steve Matai (Sea Eagles) Wing: Chase Stanley (Dragons) Five-eighth: Setaimata Sa (Roosters) Halfback: Benji Marshall (Tigers) Prop: Roy Asotasi (captain) (Rabbitohs) Hooker: Nathan Fien (Warriors) Prop: Nathan Cayless (Eels) Secondrow: Simon Mannering (Warriors) Secondrow: David Kidwell (Rabbitohs) Lock: Sonny Bill Williams (Bulldogs)
Interchange:
Sam Rapira (Warriors)
Greg Eastwood (Broncos)
Frank Pritchard (Panthers)
Isaac Luke (Rabbitohs)
If you care to know my reasoning for choosing these players read on…
Man, is this video of Kobe jumping an Aston Martin for real or are they having a Maori on? That’s crazy if he did that for real, but I’m skeptical that it’s some viral Nike marketing campaign. If you can enlighten me, please do.
As a sidenote, man Kobe’s Adidas shoes were always stink, here’s a page full of wackness.
Well after watching thisKidz in the Hall clip on YouTube I started wondering what song I’d be playing if that was me rolling in the Ford down to the cookout haha. While Zapp and Roger’s Computer Love was a fitting track, I imagined myself playing something else. A million songs sprung to mind, but I decided to settle on this one…
I was gonna go the rap route, but soul music seemed more fitting. What would you be bumping?
