You really gotta love Boxing, there’s few other sports that give you that butterflies feeling you get in your stomach before the start of a big fight. It’s the epitome of HYPE. That’s the whole deal. Despite the fact you can associate professional boxing with so many ills of society … violence, corruption, gambling, arrogance. There still aint nothing like a BIG fight. For me, what it all comes down to is simple… characters. The shit is all characters. Some people liked Holyfield ‘the warrior’, the noble good guy. Others liked Tyson, the exciting off the rails lunatic. Thats why the Contender is so dope even to people who dont like boxing. You get insight into the life of the boxers and you find yourself identifying or sympathising with guys who you wouldnt neccesarily support if all you did was see their boxing prowess.

The upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton fight is another awesome example of this shit. Floyd is a loudmouth. A flamboyant, trash talking, ig’nant rap listening showman, and arguably the best pound for pound boxer in the world. He competes on Dancing with the stars and chills with 50 cent. Hatton in stark contrast, seems like a no nonsense working class englishman from Manchester. Apparently he enjoys football, playing darts and sipping Guiness at his local pub. Like Floyd he is undefeated(albeit against lesser opponents), and like Floyd he can also be a straight funny cunt at press conferences. I watched a bunch of these on youtube yesterday and the shit is just comedy. I’m psyched to watch this fight after all this. Check:

While the rugby world freaks out about Doug Howlett jumping on two cars in London, [sarcasm] league keeps it really real [/sarcasm]. New Zealand league players worldwide have been on a crime spree, hitting the headlines for a range of illegal/offensive acts.

* Former Junior Kiwi John Te Reo was axed from the Broncos for being involved in a fight outside of a club that saw a man’s skull fractured.

* Tevita Latu, the former Kiwi, Warriors and Cronulla player who left the NRL after punching a girl in the face, was suspended from the British Super League for calling another player a nigger.

* After the Kiwis got a hiding from Aussie on Sunday a few players got on it and allegedly sexually violated a young woman in Wellington.

* And then I just read today that Iafeta Palea’aesina has been arrested in the UK for breaking a man’s jaw in a brawl at a train station.

Haha league players ay… shit. I look forward to the day when Kiwi players start making the headlines for helping their teams win.

‘Twas a rather painful weekend. Fresh from our W.C ousting we were served with these results ..

• England through to the W.C Final
• Kiwis thrashed 58 – nil

Hence I know I wasnt the only Kiwi taking some consolation in South Africa’s victory over the Argentines. Southern hemisphere pride would seemingly demand that we support S.A over England as a sign of our style of play being superior to 6 nations rugby, and also due to England being the most boring side to watch in history. However as much as I agree with these 2 ‘facts’ I still find it hard to willingly support South Africa due to their racial ass past(…. and present, oh!).

I cant help but get visions of the ‘Power of one’ whenever I think about getting behind this team. Admittedly this is sport not politics, and the team shouldnt be judged on their countrys history but I’m just ig’nant like that. Shit, if this was 81 I might have even been down at Eden Park marchin on them with the rest of the folk.

That being said… fuck England, S.A for the win. Ha.

Marc Ecko, the man behind the hideously out of fashion clothing label Ecko, is planning to donate Barry Bonds’ record breaking home run ball to the Hall of Fame with an asterix printed on it. Seems he copped the ball for 700 g’s and ran an internet poll to see what to do with it. Though it seems pretty obvious Bonds has been roid ragin’ for years, Im sure he wants to make Ecko’s head his next home run for being a smart cunt.

Though NZ enjoyed some success over the weekend in various sports codes, the US is enduring much darker times and the Fed’s is watching!

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick (who carries better than most running backs) has been indicted on federal felony charges involving dog fighting. Seems Vick and his boys had been getting on some Chucky and Fresh in his backyard since 2001. He has maybe the most raw talent ever in the NFL but, killing dogs is rough.

NBA Commisioner David Stern got a call from the FBI to inform him that one of his refs is involved in match fixing. The homie Tim Donaghy has allegedly been putting wagers on games for the last two seasons, including his own. For anyone who watched the Spurs vs Suns series (the real finals), this dude reffed game 3 and made a bunch of dodgy calls that handed San Antonio the game. So all you Spurs fans, your championship will forever be tainted! HA!

In what would normally be celebrated as one of sports greatest milestones, Barry Bonds is about to break the all-time MLB home run record. The fact that Bonds allegedly shot steroids in his ass since 1998 though, has everyone doing the Marge catch phrase “Hhhmmmmm!”. A federal grand jury is investigating whether he lied to a previous grandy jury four years ago about roid raging, and his best mate and trainer is in jail for refusing to talk.

It’s Monday today and this past weekend was one of the best for NZ sports people and teams in recent memory.

A quick recap:

All Blacks. The rain pretty much ruined any chance of it being a good game, but the man Daniel Carter, or “DC” down at the clubrooms, kicked enough penalties for us to retain the Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup. On a side note the AB’s World Cup squad was named the next day with the major talking point being Piri Weepu’s omission. Andy Ellis is all good in my opinion though and hopefully Weepu goes to league now where we need someone to play in one of the halves positions, or hooker.

Silver Ferns. I’ve seen us choke so much times I was surprised as fuck to see us actually win a tight game. While Jodi Te Huna did her best to lose us the game, I gotta tip my hat to her cos in the end she had the ‘composion’ to win it. Shot girls.

The Warriors. This was a pretty mean game. We scored some awesome tries and Wade McKinnon made one or two linebreaks, pushed the ref (again), had a fight and then got sent off for kneeing Taniela Tuiaki… which turned out to be the worst call of the season, or maybe millenium, with ref Paul Simpkins somehow managing to escape being sacked for letting his emotions get the better of him. Top 8 muthafuckas.

Scott Dixon also won his third straight Indy Racing League race in the US, some Kiwi triathlon lady won an event somewhere, the Tall Blacks beat Venezuela with more than lay-ups, and the A-League newjacks the Wellington Phoenix beat Sydney FC. Shot then people.

Oh but ONE person who let the nation down was Michael Campbell. After being up with the leaders after the first round of the British Golf Open he dropped back to somewhere that doesn’t matter. Uuuuseless.

No not resigns, but re-signs… stink. Mine and Donatello’s least favourite Kiwi league player Logan Swann – and the man Jim Henson modelled muppet Guy Smiley on – has officially signed a contract with the Warriors that will see him at the club until the end of 2008. Okay I’ve gotta admit that he’s better now than when he first left the Warriors for the UK Super League, but he always seems to make a costly error and I reckon it’s time Ivan Cleary gave Sonny Fai a run in the first grade.
