A sweet excuse for a party on a Monday night! Mondays are hospo night at Cassette #9 and the past few times that I’ve DJed there it has been cranking, which is bizarre to me but awesome at the same time. Come down and celebrate the epicness of the late great Aotea Square with us!
Raida influenced an entire generation of DJs. Not just an inspirational DJ, he was an extremely humorous character too, word to Horse and Thug Doug. He will be missed for sure.
We hip hop fans in New Zealand have been deprived of one of hip hop’s greatest live acts, Method Man and Redman. Meth and Red were billed for the Buggin’ Out Tour a few years back, Redman got as close as Australia but apparently didn’t have permission from the US government to enter New Zealand. Although at the time we were told a totally different story by the promoters. Still, we got a live Method Man solo show which was ill.
Anyways, the homie DJ Franchise was fortunate enough to see Meth and Red live in San Fran on Sunday night and has shared some footage of them performing one of my favourite joints from their new albumBlackout! 2, “City Lights”. Ghostface and Duo Live also performed on the same night, so expect some more footage in the next few days…
Baatin of the legendary Detroit hip hop crew Slum Village passed away on 31 July 2009. That leaves only one remaining member of the original trio that formed SV, T3. I can’t claim to have followed Baatin’s career closely or anything but even so Slum Village to this day are one of my favourite all time hip hop crews. They made so much great music, Fantastic, Vol. 2 in particular will always be one of my favourite hip hop albums.
“Fall N Love” was my joint! First time I heard this was on Trueschool back in 2000, that shit caught my attention straight away and I immediately begun a search for it on 12″ or LP. To this day I do not own a copy of this song on vinyl or CD (I bought the version of Fantastic, Vol. 2 that strangely didn’t have “Fall N Love” on it, WTF?!). For years my only means of listening to this joint was on Melo-D’s A.M. Workshop mixtape (great mixtape by the way). I was put out of my misery by DJ Substance about two or three years ago when he hooked me up with a vinyl rip of the joint and instrumental. I’ve been rocking the fuck out of this joint since.
Long story short, this is one of my favourite joints, evah! Sure the rhymes are nonsensical but the combination of that beat and the singing is perfection to me. I’ve endured a lot of bullshit to be able to listen to this joint on a regular basis, and now you have the convenience of peeping it on Youtube, enjoy
