Mean-As-900

Mean As

For many in Auckland, being a fan of “urban” music ain’t easy. Sometimes you don’t want to go to a club and hear guys who sound like robots harping on about Patron and shawtys ALL night. Alternatively,  it can be hard to actually have a good time and stay awake through a whole night of obscure conscious raps over some jazz loops. All things in moderation they say – so for the people that can appreciate Slum Village AND Snoop Dogg, people who like D’Angelo who don’t hate every song that’s on the Radio or TV, or people who wanna hear the new shit they just downloaded off Nah Right in a club – once every month, we’re gonna try and do something Mean.

Shucks… we might even play a 2Pac song that ISN’T “How Do You Want It” or “California Love”.

Featuring Live Performances from:

David Dallas

Vince Harder(Acoustic Set… you don’t wanna miss this)

Spycc

DJ’s:

Fire & Ice

Dj PayDirt

Dj Mouli

& special guest

P-Money

To top it off we’ll be having a Street Fighter Hyper Comp with the winner scoring themself a copy of the brand new Super Street Fighter 4 which drops the end of this month.

Too mean.

Hey Buddy I’m Good

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

“YEAH… YEAH…YEAH…YEAH”

This song has continued to get better over time, to the point where it is now officially my shit. Due to the fact that the kick drum is mostly absent, the timing on this song kinda threw me at first but once my brain got used to where the “one” was … shit became undeniable.

Bossman Ross was so excited by it he threw a verse on and wanted to shoot a vid. He also continues his alarming trend of not wearing sunglasses in vids – out of it cunt. New verses from the brothers Thornton also.

Let it be known, this video depicts the exact enviroment you should be enjoying this song in. Mint.

Pepsi is rude as

LMAO

If you didn’t already think Pepsi was rude as fuck, this timeline should’ve got your mind right. Personal highlights include 1906 where they stooped to using subliminals “drink” and “delicious” – genius. 2005’s IMPACT stylings are equally wretched.

In my opinion they shoulda stuck with the 1973, it’s the best balance of distancing themselves from Cokes branding and looking half dece. That latest one looks like a logo for a petrol company.

On the topic of Pepsi though, try and count how many people you’ve met in your life that prefer Pepsi over Coke. I’d wager that none of you know more than 3 people tops that are on the Pepsi buzz.

Jay Dee and Baatin

Baatin of the legendary Detroit hip hop crew Slum Village passed away on 31 July 2009. That leaves only one remaining member of the original trio that formed SV, T3. I can’t claim to have followed Baatin’s career closely or anything but even so Slum Village to this day are one of my favourite all time hip hop crews. They made so much great music, Fantastic, Vol. 2 in particular will always be one of my favourite hip hop albums.

“Fall N Love” was my joint! First time I heard this was on Trueschool back in 2000, that shit caught my attention straight away and I immediately begun a search for it on 12″ or LP. To this day I do not own a copy of this song on vinyl or CD (I bought the version of Fantastic, Vol. 2 that strangely didn’t have “Fall N Love” on it, WTF?!). For years my only means of listening to this joint was on Melo-D’s A.M. Workshop mixtape (great mixtape by the way). I was put out of my misery by DJ Substance about two or three years ago when he hooked me up with a vinyl rip of the joint and instrumental. I’ve been rocking the fuck out of this joint since.

Long story short, this is one of my favourite joints, evah! Sure the rhymes are nonsensical but the combination of that beat and the singing is perfection to me. I’ve endured a lot of bullshit to be able to listen to this joint on a regular basis, and now you have the convenience of peeping it on Youtube, enjoy ;)

Rest in peace Baatin and Jay Dee!

Are you going to The Game concert ?

View results

If my calculations are correct, The Game’s Auckland concert is exactly one week from today. As of today, I have not bought a ticket. That isn’t all that outlandish considering I’ve never been the most organised fellow. However what I did find alarming was the realisation that, as of today, I don’t know of anyone else who’s bought a ticket either.

Perhaps all the people I know are just Game-haters, but I think the issue here runs deeper. Seems whenever we have an ‘urban’ artist of Game’s caliber we’re all quick to assume that the promoters a shmuck, not enough people will buy tickets, and it’s not gonna happen. Subsequently we don’t buy a ticket and the prophecy is fulfilled.

It’s a shame cause whenever a more ‘niche’ act like say Dizzee Rascal or Lupe Fiasco comes to town, people are jumpin out the fucken window to go buy their tickets – funnily enough, a lot of these same people probably bump Game’s music much more than they do either of those 2.  The fact that the niche acts are always brought over by the promoters we actually have faith in helps, but I think people also just find it easier to believe that smaller acts will actually come here, as opposed to the big superstars. Inferiority complex ?

The other key beef I see people having with this concert is the Logan Campbell Center.

The Logan… fucken … Campbell center.

I’m sure there were fans saying “oh well” as soon as they announced that.  Some out of fear of leaving central aucks for a show, others out of dismay. God I hate that place. I can’t quite put my finger on what causes it, but it’s just depressing. The most depressing venue in Auckland. It feels like a bigger than average school hall. Thinking about it now, i feel ashamed of what we as a city subjected our international performers to back in the day. A circus tent by some rugby fields, and Logan Campbell Intermediate. Fucken mean, no wonder I never got to see Wu Tang.

Whatevs tho, let’s take this to the polls. Who’s going ??

mimikaki

Had a chat with our mate Nicholas last night, he’s in Tokyo at the moment and wanted to inform me of a new pastime he’d recently partaken in whilst visiting Akihabra.

Mimikaki

What is Mimikaki you ask ? Here’s the definition:

For 2,500 yen you can experience the pleasure of laying your head on the tender thighs of a yukata-clad young woman as she picks the wax out of your ears.

Now I don’t regularly engage in picking the wax out of my ears, but on occasion I’ve had to handle a blockage (hey man, flu + loud clubs + flights .. it can take a toll). I can’t say I’ve ever found it to be that sensual an experience to be perfectly honest, and the thought of some chick I don’t know having to scrounge round my ear seems somewhat embarassing .

Perhaps all the attraction lays in the head to thigh action ? Regardless, it’s apparently all the rage at the mo and Nick rates it so it could be worth a look in. What say you’s ?
