ultimate-gun

Following on with the Game theme, I was looking on an old hard drive and found this gem lying around. I can’t remember when exactly I got it (05 maybe ?) and I don’t remember where I got it from either, but being that I  used to give it regular spins I’m glad I’ve found it again. It’s titled as J.B feat The Game, but I have no idea who J.B is, or what this was for - and being that J.B only has 1 verse you’d be forgiven for thinking it was Game’s song. Conceptually it does the old 2pac “Me and my girlfriend”, talk about your gun like it’s a girl ones - it’s just the soulful romantic version. Sounds absurd, but the song is good stuff especially for any of you Game stan’s who didn’t already have it. Anybody who can shed light on what this track was from, go hard.

Te Kemu - Alternate cover

Any of yous heard Game’s latest album? I can’t be fucked writing a review of it haha, but I thought I’d share my thoughts on a couple of the tracks I like and also up a link to a zip of all them for you good folks without Boxden accounts and such. So, aside from the already released tracks in Dope Boys, My Life and Game’s Pain, here’s my top 5 - download them here.

Share your thoughts on the album in the comments section. Where does LAX fit with Game’s previous two albums?

LAX Files - Cool JR Rotem beat with Game explaining what it is to be gangsta - I’m sure you cynics will find some irony in that.

State of Emergency feat. Ice Cube - Damn Cube shoulda got a verse on this, not just the hook. This is some old hard West Coast shit, no singing, no g-funk - just some punch you in your face type stuff. JR Rotem again.

House of Pain - This is in a similar vein to the above - although not so West Coast besides the lyrical content. DJ Toomp this time on the beat.

Let Us Live feat. Chrisette Michelle - I fucken hate Scott Storch usually, but this beat is bad. If you have decent sounds at home or your car, give it a hoon.

Angel feat. Common - Out of the 5, this is the most different. It’s way more laidback, funky synth type shit. What’d you expect though, Common ain’t gonna rap on something like State of Emergency. Produced by Kanye, the man yet again.

Super freak physique like Raphael Saadiq

super freak physique like raphael saadiq

Raphael Saadiq has long been the man in my books. Whether it’s with Tony Toni Tone, Lucy Pearl or his solo shit, this cat is super talented. Aside from his own projects, he’s also contributed production or instrumentation on several other artist’s tracks, like D’Angelo’s Lady, Total’s Kissing You, John Legend’s Show Me & Kelis’ Glow among others. He’s also done shit with the likes of Joss Stone, Anthony Hamilton, Mary J, Snoop and the list goes on. If you know even a fraction of this guy’s body of work (and I don’t proclaim to know allll his shit) one thing should be apparent to you - he’s got soul. Haha it’s sort of a cliched thing to say, but it’s the simple truth and it’s something that sets a lot of artists apart from the rest. Anyway, the reason I’m blogging on this guy is cos I recently came across a sampler of his next solo album, which is called The Way I See It - and it sounds like it’s gonna be mean as fuck. As the cover suggests, Saadiq’s gone for an old school feel and is out to reproduce that soulful sound of the Motown era we all know and love. The album’s not due out ’til September, and as far as I know it hasn’t leaked on the net yet, but below is a link to the sampler which has 5 full tracks to tide you over. The full album tracklist is after the jump if you’re interested.

the greatest guest mc of all time

eminem

I was scouring through the XXL site and found this article from a couple days ago about the greatest guest mc’s of all time. I don’t disagree with any of the candidates they have mentioned being amongst the best, but there is a glaring oversight in the lack of a mention for Eminem. The article crowns Busta as the G.O.A.T guest MC, which I think is a fair argument strictly for the fact that he’s been killing guest spots consistently for longer than anyone else. For me when considering favourites I’ve tried to take into account versatility, as far as some dudes have done their best work on solo R&B guest spots. Some dudes straight kill it on tracks with other MC’s. With that criteria in mind, my personal top 3 are as follows:

(1) Jay-Z - All round brilliance, too many mindblowing guest spots to list and they’re across the board. “Crazy In Love” is top 3 R&B guest spots, plus he fucks up other rappers on the regular. Peep lesser known joints like Miss Jade’s “Count it off” and Sigel’s “Think it’s a game” and try and front on the god. Slick needs to do his post bout Hov guest spots to school everyone.

(2) Eminem - The best at guesting on hip hop songs ever IMO, but his lack of R&B game knocks him to #2 status for me. Until T.I - “Touchdown” I don’t think Eminem had EVER had a bad guest verse/not fucked up who ever else he was on the track with. Biggie’s “Dead Wrong”, 50 - “Patiently Waiting”, Jay-Z “Renegade”, Obie Trice’s “Girls”, “Forgot about Dre” the list goes on and on.

(3) Ludacris - Luda invents flows. For my money he’s the best ever on R&B guest spots, just for the way he’ll come up with some pattern or flow that steals the show. His verse on Ciara’s “Oh” was damn near religious for me, even that Usher “Dat girl jangling” verse was insane. He also does the damage on other cunts too see the “I’m So Hood Remix” and Twista’s “Higher” on the lesser known tip.

What say you folk, where your top 3’s at ? Some best verse suggestions would be good too.

jayandjeezy

I hope now that the vid is out people are coming to the realisation that “Put On” is rap song of the year thus far (along with Game - “Dope Boys”). In a move which seems like the universes response to my post about Prodigy yesterday, the remix featuring Hov has surfaced. In which he co-incidentally mentions :

“I put Prodigy in his place on that Summer Jam screen” Jay-Z

Ha, touche. If I wasn’t an even bigger Jigga fan I’d be probably be mad at him for fucking up my favourite groups career. Back to the remix though, Jay is nice on it and seems to be the only dude who actually talks about how he “puts on for his city”. I never know what Jeezy’s on about talkin bout “dinner plates” and shit, and Kanye came through with verse about self on the emotional tip. ‘Ye still gets the win for best verse though, strictly for sayin he “feels like there’s still bitches that owe him sex”. Don’t we all ‘Ye, don’t we all.

Key To The City

Mobb Deep are my favourite rap group of all time. Not saying they’re the best group ever, but sentimentally for me - my fave. Round the mid 90’s if you’d asked me I woulda told you Prodigy is top 3 all day, and even now I still he reckon he has one of the best voices/deliveries of all time. As a huge fan it does kind of sadden me seeing how P is now viewed in the game. For me, P still steals the show on the majority of tracks he’s on - however this is generally due to him saying something ridiculous/dumb that sticks in your head. “I throw a TV at you crazy”, “a lil blood get on my daughter, it’s nothin she’ll live”, “I don’t run - I jus gun .. you all up”. He is fortunate in this sense, not giving a fuck just makes for more memorable lines. That’s charisma.

It is nice however, to be reminded of how good this dude can actually rap if he feels the urge. This vids taken a while to get here but P’s verse on Alchemist’s “Key to the city” is my favourite of his since, fuck I dunno … Murda Muzik ?? No truely retarded quotables, but the flow is a throwback to a younger more focussed Prodigy. Real smooth. Being that our man is now locked up in the pen I was wondering what they’d do with the vid, but the little kid they’ve got to perform Prodigy’s verse kills it. Worth the watch for him alone.

J-Live

If you don’t know already J-Live is performing at Fu tomorrow (Wednesday) night in Auckland and our boy D-Fizzle has arranged for a brief J-Live performance and autograph session at DMC High Street at 5PM. A fucking sweet opportunity for ya to get a sneak peak at what to expect from the full show for free, woohoo. I’ll be at the Fu show playing support along with Penfold, Substance, D-Form, Truent, Alias and possibly even Rectangle again. Hopefully he does Braggin’ Writes live that would be ill :)
