Rest in peace Baatin

Jay Dee and Baatin

Baatin of the legendary Detroit hip hop crew Slum Village passed away on 31 July 2009. That leaves only one remaining member of the original trio that formed SV, T3. I can’t claim to have followed Baatin’s career closely or anything but even so Slum Village to this day are one of my favourite all time hip hop crews. They made so much great music, Fantastic, Vol. 2 in particular will always be one of my favourite hip hop albums.

“Fall N Love” was my joint! First time I heard this was on Trueschool back in 2000, that shit caught my attention straight away and I immediately begun a search for it on 12″ or LP. To this day I do not own a copy of this song on vinyl or CD (I bought the version of Fantastic, Vol. 2 that strangely didn’t have “Fall N Love” on it, WTF?!). For years my only means of listening to this joint was on Melo-D’s A.M. Workshop mixtape (great mixtape by the way). I was put out of my misery by DJ Substance about two or three years ago when he hooked me up with a vinyl rip of the joint and instrumental. I’ve been rocking the fuck out of this joint since.

Long story short, this is one of my favourite joints, evah! Sure the rhymes are nonsensical but the combination of that beat and the singing is perfection to me. I’ve endured a lot of bullshit to be able to listen to this joint on a regular basis, and now you have the convenience of peeping it on Youtube, enjoy ;)

Rest in peace Baatin and Jay Dee!

Throwback: Wu-Tang Clan clownin’ callers on Radio 1 ‘97

Wu-Tang Clan (R.I.P. Ol' Dirty)

While we’re being nostalgic about the Wu, peep this shit. Unkut.com posted up this recording of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man and Rza from the Wu-Tang Clan taking calls from fans on Tim Westwood’s show on Radio 1 in ‘97; about a month before Forever dropped. The result is almost 20 minutes of straight comedy from the clan – witty unpredictable talent and natural game for sure! Peep Rza’s response to that dude’s request for a record deal, classic!

This recording is from a full hour long session on Tim Westwood’s show which also featured Masta Killa, you can download the full hour here:

The night that I DJed for Ghostface Killah!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Me, Ghost and Wigs

This weekend just passed, Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan blessed New Zealand with his first live performance in the country; only the third original founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan to come to our shores. He played at the Powerstation in Auckland with Shaun Wigs and Du Lilz of Theodore Unit and tore it down! Suffice to say it was one of the illest shows I’ve been to. But this ain’t no gig review, this is the story about how I DJed for Ghostface Killah… yeah, you read that right, I DJed for Ghostface Killah, no bullshit! How did this come to be? Allow me to explain…

The following is my recollection of the events leading up to and including my DJ set at the Ghostface Killah after-party and is the god-honest 100% truth! Give me five to ten minutes of your time and I’ll give you an entertaining read. (more…)

Sonic loses his rings

Charles Hamilton overstepped the line in this lil’ battle of wits and got brought back to reality by this chick who I assume wasn’t too pleased about him joking about abortion. See the video below to peep the circumstances that lead up to the punch that was heard all over the hip hop blogosphere.

Video: Christmas in Hollis

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Back in my high school days I had a part time job at a department store, at Christmas time I’d end up working full-time as the permanent staff would take their holidays around this time. They had one Christmas music CD that they’d play instore over and over again every year for about six weeks prior to Christmas, it drove me up the fucking wall, it was torture. The pay was shit, the customer were assholes, and I had to spend hours on end listening to some of the worst music ever created ughhh. The only time I was ever happy during that time was when Run DMC’s ‘Christmas In Hollis’ would come on, it was the only shit on that entire CD that resembled shit that I actually liked. I’d look forward to the moment that that song would come on every hour, trouble was some old bitch in the office seemed to take offence to the song so I never heard more than half of the song before she hit the skip button. Grrr, that bitch took away my one happy moment at work, if she’s still alive, “FUCK YOU!” This ones for you…

Upper Hutt Posse on The Music Mix

Upper Hutt Posse

Sam Wicks has hit us again with another cool hip hop feature on his radio show The Music Mix on Radio New Zealand National. This week is the 20th anniversary of the release of Aotearoa’s first hip hop record, Upper Hutt Posse’s “E Tu”, to mark the occasion Wicks spoke to Te Kupu of UHP and key members of the local hip hop community about the importance of this record.

Twenty years ago, Upper Hutt Posse released the kaupapa-driven single ‘E Tu’, a release that has the distinction of being Aotearoa’s first rap record.

The Music Mix marks the anniversary of ‘E Tu’ by speaking to Te Kupu, the voice behind the Posse, and talks to key members of Aotearoa’s hip hop community about the impact and influence of the politically-charged track.

(Produced by Sam Wicks – interviews with Te Kupu, DJ Sirvere, Kerry Buchanan)

The Music Mix is broadcast on Radio New Zealand National on Thursday nights after the news at 11PM, hit up this link here to find your local frequency. The UHP programme will be broadcast this Thursday 27 November. Don’t sleep… literally!

The genius of Jan Terri

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

After unearthing the brilliance of Jan Terri’s hit single “Losing You” yesterday I went on an investigation to find out more about the creative genius behind the greatest music video ever made. I discovered the following video article from 2000 on the Daily Show. As you’ll find from the video Jan Terri is no one-hit wonder, she has recorded several hit songs with amazing visual accompaniments such as “My Little Brother” and the chilling “Get Down Goblin”

The following is my all-time favourite Billy T clip, check it out and share your favourite videos and memories in the comments yo…

i think we was dancin to uhh… fiesta remix

Monday, June 30th, 2008

God bless the person that uploaded this to youtube, I’d searched for this numerous times in the past so I could share it with the shotthen massive to no avail. This song/vid is a bonafide classic, when the drinks are getting poured and this song comes on – forget it. 3 classic verses, 3 classic performances. Omilio Sparks deserves an oscar for his overacting, Oschino praises a girl for having straight teeth, and Young Chris reminds females worldwide that time’s the only thing you can spend with him. School yourself.

Update:
Appears Universal are fronting about the embedding as per usual, here’s the link to the vid.
