Girlz in the hood

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Screenshot from 60 Minutes' 'Girlz in the hood' video

“I used to roll exactly like a fulla, act like a fulla… and yeah, get down dirty like a fulla too”

Girls in the hood was a piece about girl gangs that ran on TV3’s 60 Minutes last night. It was full of gem’s like the above quote. For all its laughs though it is kinda sad that these girls feel that they have to play tough guy role to get by. The full piece has been uploaded to TV3’s TV On Demand and you can peep it here. Check it out, and discuss…

*Oh yeah, Penfeezy, you know the deal, I want an audio rip of that quote immediately ;)

My love of this song is well documented, good to see it get the visual treatment. Helicopter shots and national geographic locales – I dig it.

New video from Vince Harder, what you think? I’m not impressed by his painting skills eh, if I had a house I wouldn’t let this guy near it with a paint can.

Drizzy

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Drake’s buzz seems to be reaching deafening proportions. His So Far Gone mixtape continues to convert male and female alike, and it’s remarkable to see a new act with followers as devout as in this vid. Song ain’t even got a video and they’re reciting every word – fucken mean. I been playing Drake’s material to the Mrs and she remarked how nice it was to hear someone new that could “rap good” again. I understood what she was getting at.

Hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but after seeing a good portion of the acts highlighted in XXL’s top 10 freshman list in the flesh, gotta say the list is looking a bit patchy right about now. haha

see my chain – make the same face from home alone

home-alone

I wanted to post this Wiz Khalifa song the moment I saw this video for it pop up, however after seeing him explain that the video was not meant to go public and that the director had gone ahead and dropped it without his approval I had to digress.

Personally I didn’t mind the vid. Though it definitely appeared unfinished, his reciting of the above line, followed by his Macauley Culkin action in the vid actually made me LOL. Plus, I liked the song so much I didn’t really need much visual  accompaniment. His new mixtape dropped yesterday and on first impression it isn’t what I’d hoped for after hearing “Take Away” -  but it was a must d/l strictly so I could get my hands on an mp3 of this song.  This is the one if you like your sounds smooth.

Audio: Smashproof Interview

Smashproof

Here’s a great interview with Smashproof we managed to score off LJM. It delves into “The Weekend” album and does a good job of recapping the Smashproof/MTC story up till now. What I found particularly interesting was hearing Tyree speak on his solo debut and his feelings regarding how he was initially received – honest stuff.

DJ Revolution live on the Trueschool Hip Hop Show Part 1

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Last night the legendary DJ Revolution came by the Trueschool Hip Hop show to hang out and spin some records. This dude is a monster on the turntables, his Twitter bio says “a wack muthafukkas worst nightmare” and that pretty much sums it up. As a DJ when you watch this guy spin you usually come to one of two possible conclusions: a) I need to practice more or b) I need to quit. He spun for almost an hour last night and suffice to say he tore it up. He even busted out the lost verse from ‘It Ain’t Hard 2 Tell’ which had the MCs in the room scratching their heads. Below is a little taster from Rev’s set last night, there’s more where that came from too so stay tuned. Rev will be spinning at Zen tonight in Auckland so if you like what you see go peep that out.

Raekwon explains the purple tape

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

The original cassette version of Raekwon’s now classic OB4CL album earned the nickname “the purple tape” because well it was literally a purple cassette tape. In the video below Rae breaks down the science behind using the purple tape to differentiate his product from every other rappers shit. I’m a marketing major so I found that shit interesting plus it’s prolly even more relevant now given the saturation of the hip hop market. Artists need to think of new ways to stand out to avoid being swallowed up by the multitude of new music that gets served up every day.

Case in point, would you have watched a video by Asher Roth called ‘buy my album’ or the one he put out today asking you not to buy his album?

*oh yeah, I can’t say I ever noticed MC Eiht in the Can It Be So Simple video
