Sunday, November 30th, 2008Man, this is a cool ass Nokia advert. It’s a pretty mean idea and they executed it perfectly.

Sam Wicks has hit us again with another cool hip hop feature on his radio show The Music Mix on Radio New Zealand National. This week is the 20th anniversary of the release of Aotearoa’s first hip hop record, Upper Hutt Posse‘s “E Tu”, to mark the occasion Wicks spoke to Te Kupu of UHP and key members of the local hip hop community about the importance of this record.
Twenty years ago, Upper Hutt Posse released the kaupapa-driven single ‘E Tu’, a release that has the distinction of being Aotearoa’s first rap record.
The Music Mix marks the anniversary of ‘E Tu’ by speaking to Te Kupu, the voice behind the Posse, and talks to key members of Aotearoa’s hip hop community about the impact and influence of the politically-charged track.
(Produced by Sam Wicks – interviews with Te Kupu, DJ Sirvere, Kerry Buchanan)
The Music Mix is broadcast on Radio New Zealand National on Thursday nights after the news at 11PM, hit up this link here to find your local frequency. The UHP programme will be broadcast this Thursday 27 November. Don’t sleep… literally!

I’m a bit of a geek for Young Sid shit, he is without a doubt one of my favourite rappers. Kirk has been posting a couple of freestyles from Sid on the MTC blog and yesterday announced that the freestyles are a teaser for a kiwi hip hop themed Young Sid mixtape titled “Domestic Disturbance” due to drop this year. There’s only 39 days left of 2008 so I’m assuming that that means it is coming out pretty soon, bring it on. Oh yeah, and he’s about to begin work on the follow-up to his album “The Truth”, most definitely looking forward to that

Our friends over at Qubic launched their new website qubicstore.com on Thursday afternoon. They’ve also launched a blog as part of the website with a whole bunch of contributors including our own Donatello Versace. Askew is up in there, the stores staff and a bunch of other related peeps, so there are bound to be plenty of interesting ramblings. Check out the blog at qubicstore.com/blog.

Speaking of Sam Wicks, he has put together a cool feature on world renowned dancer and musician Suga Pop which will be broadcast on The Music Mix on Thursday night. I remember, when I was a bit younger, my mates who were into b-boy shit were in total awe of Suga Pop (what’s up Cruchan!) because he’d apparently spent some of his youth in New Zealand before heading to the US and cracking it – consequently dude is a bit of a legend round these parts. Conveniently Dave is Pop’s cousin, so he did the interviewing.
It’s gonna be broadcast on Radio New Zealand National this Thursday night after the news at 11PM, peep this link here to find your local frequency.

Still reeling over the election results? Based on our totally accurate polling I’m assuming many of you aren’t pleased with the outcome. Sam Wicks sent me this politically-charged rap yesterday, John Key and side-kick Rodney Hide rubbing it in all of ya faces, lol.

Yup yup, check here for my spiel. I almost like this as much as Junior Spesh. Shouts to Mr Sicc and Tek for doing it up. Mean.
