The ol’ mince & cheese

Hore Pie

Man, if you live in Christchurch start looking under your couch cushions for gold coins right now cos Georgie Pie is coming back - but only temporarily. Tomorrow - Sunday September 28th - a bakery at 475 Papanui Rd in Christchurch will be set up just like an old Georgie Pie restaurant and they’re gonna be slanging all the old mince & cheese etc favourites. Word is that it’s a gold coin ‘donation’, so none of that $1.20 bullshit the restaurant tried to pull in its later days, just a dollar - or 2 if you’re feeling generous. Apparently two Broadcasting School students are filming a documentary on the rise and fall of the restaurant chain, and this thing tomorrow is part of it - they even have an original Georgie Pie food technologist onboard with the o.g recipes haha. I also read that there will be prize giveaways too of shit like Sega Master Systems and Atari consoles. Mean. After the recent announcement that Sparkles, Tangy Fruits and Snifters will no longer be made, this temporary Georgie Pie resurrection thing is pretty timely, so if you’re in the area go show some love.

Oh and does Foodtown still make the Georgie Pie pies? I haven’t bought a pie from a supermarket in how long.

kids these days…

Yo, did anyone catch the story on 60 Minutes last week called “Fear Factor”? It was basically about how kids these days are treated as though they’re extremely fragile and how politcial-correctness and over-protective parenting has created a sterile risk-free and totally boring environment for children to grow up in. Here’s a link to the story for those interested, it’s not a particularly great story but what’s great about it is that it made me reminisce about the days before the bullrush ban, compulsory bike helmets, fenced trampolines etc and all the crazy shit I used to get up to as a kid unsupervised (and sometimes supervised haha). I thought it would be a cool idea to share crazy childhood stories in the comments section of this post, the kind that would horrify parents today, and lets see who’s got the craziest or funniest. Every now and then I tell these sorta stories to Dave and he generally tends to think I’m full of shit, and maybe some of you will too haha, but here’s one to get the ball rolling…

One of my uncles has got guns and when I was young he taught me how to shoot them, these were the real deal too, not air guns. ‘Cos I was young the kickback on them was pretty powerful too, usually left me with bruises on my arms. I’d generally go shooting something with my uncle everytime I visited his place. I remember this one time when I was there when I was about nine, me and this other kid who lived nearby built a life-size dummy from old clothes and shit and constructed a wooden frame so it could stand upright. My uncle let me and my mate have the guns, so we set the dummy up in the yard and blasted it with the shotgun until the wooden frame broke to pieces and the dummy fell to the ground in a crumpled heap. Thinking back on this story cracks me up, it seemed like just average kids stuff to me at the time but now the concept of kids with guns seems kinda outlandish.

So yeah, there’s a story, do share yours and I’ll see if I can pull some more crazy shit from my memory…

This has been on TV for a minute, but I’ve only just discovered it on Youtube to blog it up. I dunno how the double entendre was missed by the ad’s producers, but it cracks me up every time. Poor Fafa.

TIP

This track is bad. I haven’t had the proper version of Paper Trail long, but this track stood out straight away. It’s good to see Cliff back with DJ Toomp - that combo accounts for 5 tracks all up on Paper Trail. On that note, is Toomp one of the most consistent producers currently doing it? I like almost everything he touches: T.I - What You Know, 24s, U Don’t Know Me etc; Nas - NIGGER; Kanye - Good Life, Big Brother, Can’t Tell Me Nothing; Jigga - Say Hello; Game - House of Pain; Jeezy -  The Recession, I Luv It; Rick Ross - White House and even Mariah Carey - Lovin You Long Time. 56 Barz isn’t just about the beat though, TIP murks it. No hook, just straight up the guts. Have a listen below and when you can, check out the whole album. The King is back.

kanye

I was a big fan of his performance of this at the VMA’s, even had it on repeat on Youtube just so I could keep hearing it. Subsequently I couldn’t wait for the recorded version to leak, but was slightly disappointed cause it sounded demo/unfinished - to me at least. I’m all for keeping things slightly unpolished if an artist feels the demo of a song has a performance or energy they couldn’t capture with future takes and more re-working, but the hook on the last version of “Love Lockdown” just sounded like he’d put down lazy guide vocals and never gone back to fix them. The hook sounds enunciated properly now, and doesn’t sound like he’s taperin off/runnin out of breath from clapping at the same time. The drums on the hook also got more oomph too, more like the VMA performance. Killer.

Warriors… All Blacks… my gosh

the warrior

Holy damn, what a 24 hours of sport! First of all, props to the All Blacks for their Bledisloe/Tri-Nations win last night. It was a pretty tight game and a well deserved win. Our loosies were killing it, and man it’s good to see Weepu back - shot boys. Then today I managed to shake a slight hangover in time to see the Warriors under-20 side win their quarterfinal against St George convincingly. Heapsa talented dudes in that team man, Kevin Locke and Russell Packer especially… Kiwi league’s future looks pretty promising. Then there was the big one, the Warriors vs the Storm. Understandably we weren’t really expected to win, but somehow we did. Un-fucken-believable. I’m still a bit lost for words, but this is pretty much the greatest day in my life hahaha. I was fist pumping and all that shit during that last play from Ropati and Vatuvei which saw Witt (eventually) put the ball down and score in the last minute. The even better news is that we get a home game next Friday now to decide who makes the semi-finals. As soon as those tickets go on sale I’m in there. Man, getting up Monday morning for work is gonna be all that much easier after this weekend of sport, yessss.

kia kaha he reckons

Hooooly shit, how has this gone under the shotthen radar ?  “Forever Strong” is a film based on the Highland high school rugby team, 17 time U.S national champions. These dudes obviously don’t fuck around, they even wear black canterbury jerseys and do the haka. Phenomenal.

Props to Fire & Ice for the hookup.
