mama, this is fact not fiction
I hope now that the vid is out people are coming to the realisation that “Put On” is rap song of the year thus far (along with Game - “Dope Boys”). In a move which seems like the universes response to my post about Prodigy yesterday, the remix featuring Hov has surfaced. In which he co-incidentally mentions :
“I put Prodigy in his place on that Summer Jam screen” Jay-Z
Ha, touche. If I wasn’t an even bigger Jigga fan I’d be probably be mad at him for fucking up my favourite groups career. Back to the remix though, Jay is nice on it and seems to be the only dude who actually talks about how he “puts on for his city”. I never know what Jeezy’s on about talkin bout “dinner plates” and shit, and Kanye came through with verse about self on the emotional tip. ‘Ye still gets the win for best verse though, strictly for sayin he “feels like there’s still bitches that owe him sex”. Don’t we all ‘Ye, don’t we all.

Young Jeezy feat Jay-Z - “Put On” (Remix)

Is it though? I mean, it’s a nice pop song and all, but Jeezy’s just been doing the same thing since he came out, right? Big anthemic hooks, blazing production no doubt, but real empty even by modern standards. Honestly I prefer Rick Ross’ Reppin’ My City on this subject matter alone.
Thing is, I agree that day back when was great day for rap music, cuz T.I.’s No Matter What is still my favourite track of this year. I love how epic it sounds, Tip sounding all broken down, like he’s barely holding it together. Plus a guitar solo! I mean, it’s just got a kind of courage, reach and ambition that is real rare in hip hop. Or anywhere. I kinda think when he’s on (which isn’t often enough) he’s the best around right now.
But this remix is nice, and def agree w/ Kanye’s line, kills me every time.

I’m subscribing to the “if it ain’t broke” formula with Jeezy, I’m not adverse to growth, but i don’t feel like he should shy away from his strengths. I also feel like rap music NEEDS anthems like this and “Dope Boys” right now. Singles that are straight up hardcore rap songs. Songs that aren’t R&B/Ne-Yo & Dream co-written/euro trance influenced etc etc. I feel like the last actual rap anthem was “Throw some D’s” and that seems like it came out an eternity ago.
