jayandjeezy

I hope now that the vid is out people are coming to the realisation that “Put On” is rap song of the year thus far (along with Game - “Dope Boys”). In a move which seems like the universes response to my post about Prodigy yesterday, the remix featuring Hov has surfaced. In which he co-incidentally mentions :

“I put Prodigy in his place on that Summer Jam screen” Jay-Z

Ha, touche. If I wasn’t an even bigger Jigga fan I’d be probably be mad at him for fucking up my favourite groups career. Back to the remix though, Jay is nice on it and seems to be the only dude who actually talks about how he “puts on for his city”. I never know what Jeezy’s on about talkin bout “dinner plates” and shit, and Kanye came through with verse about self on the emotional tip. ‘Ye still gets the win for best verse though, strictly for sayin he “feels like there’s still bitches that owe him sex”. Don’t we all ‘Ye, don’t we all.

Key To The City

Mobb Deep are my favourite rap group of all time. Not saying they’re the best group ever, but sentimentally for me - my fave. Round the mid 90’s if you’d asked me I woulda told you Prodigy is top 3 all day, and even now I still he reckon he has one of the best voices/deliveries of all time. As a huge fan it does kind of sadden me seeing how P is now viewed in the game. For me, P still steals the show on the majority of tracks he’s on - however this is generally due to him saying something ridiculous/dumb that sticks in your head. “I throw a TV at you crazy”, “a lil blood get on my daughter, it’s nothin she’ll live”, “I don’t run - I jus gun .. you all up”. He is fortunate in this sense, not giving a fuck just makes for more memorable lines. That’s charisma.

It is nice however, to be reminded of how good this dude can actually rap if he feels the urge. This vids taken a while to get here but P’s verse on Alchemist’s “Key to the city” is my favourite of his since, fuck I dunno … Murda Muzik ?? No truely retarded quotables, but the flow is a throwback to a younger more focussed Prodigy. Real smooth. Being that our man is now locked up in the pen I was wondering what they’d do with the vid, but the little kid they’ve got to perform Prodigy’s verse kills it. Worth the watch for him alone.

J-Live

If you don’t know already J-Live is performing at Fu tomorrow (Wednesday) night in Auckland and our boy D-Fizzle has arranged for a brief J-Live performance and autograph session at DMC High Street at 5PM. A fucking sweet opportunity for ya to get a sneak peak at what to expect from the full show for free, woohoo. I’ll be at the Fu show playing support along with Penfold, Substance, D-Form, Truent, Alias and possibly even Rectangle again. Hopefully he does Braggin’ Writes live that would be ill :)

wiz_2000

I figure I’ve been plugging this Wiz stuff since the jump, I might as well keep going now that he’s dropped this new single. He’s stuck to the script and this one sounds like some more ‘turn of the millenium’ trance, albeit without the famous sample.  I don’t know what it is about this cunt, but he cracks me up everytime. Talking bout “bad bitches”, sippin patron, and throwin money in the air over production that conjures up images of french dudes with peroxide spiked hair and glowsticks is a juxtaposition of epic proportions. I know this Euro trance sound has been all the rage since Timberlakes last album dropped, but I don’t think anyone else’s production has managed to sound quite as authentically cheese as the stuff Johnny Juliano has done for Wiz. The shit just sounds so… I dunno… non-urban ?

Question for the day, how much more life is there in these arpeggiator beats and Autotune choruses ? I’m givin both another 8 - 12 months.

Wiz Khalifa - “Make it hot”

this looks tight

Monday, July 21st, 2008

This trailer for Watchmen is apparently showing at all the screenings of The Dark Knight (which also looks tight - out this week). Some of you would have seen the Watchmen graphic novels floating around various stores. Can’t say I’ve ever read them myself but I recall my flatmate trying to put me onto them and he tends to know what’s what.

Smashproof “Sunday Star Times”

Tyree, Deach and Sid (L-R)

MTC have given the public their first sneak peek at the forthcoming Smashproof album, they’ve uploaded a stream of a brand new joint by Smashproof called ‘Sunday Star Times’. I’ve mentioned before that I was never big on Smashproof’s collective work in the past but if this new joint is an indication of what to expect from Smashproof in future that could change :). ‘Sunday Star Times’ feaures Tyree, Sid and Deach, prompted by a frontpage newspaper article about a drug bust involving two deaths, telling stories about the tragic lives of the people affected. Real promising stuff, looking forward to hearing more. Head over to the MTC blog to peep the joint…

Kidnap that fool!

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Haha man I love these shits. My boy Jay linked me this up today, it’s one of those vids where a song is synched up to a cartoon (or puppets in this case), and all sorts of funny things match up and hilarity ensues. This one here is Bert & Ernie “performing” M.O.P’s banger Ante Up. After the jump are two more essentials of the genre.

Nas - “Untitled” LP

Nasty Nas

I’m gonna assume a lot of you good folks out there are net savvy enough to have the new Nas album, “Untitled”, so what’s your thoughts on it so far?

I still haven’t had enough time to properly digest the whole thing, but on current impressions it feels like a near 5-micer to me, with the potential to be a classic (yeah I said it) - especially if it sparks something of a revolution in the current hip hop climate from dancing to thinking. I had doubts whether Nas could carry the ‘nigger’ concept for a whole album, but I think he’s largely achieved it and in the process kicks some real knowledge and gives listeners a lot of food for thought. Tracks like America, Sly Fox and Black President provoked more thinking in me than maybe any other songs I’ve ever heard. Aside from the political and social commentary, and his ability to stick to the theme (most of the time at least), it was also awesome - and a relief - that the beats are on point too. Breathe, Y’all My Niggas, Testify and Untitled are the shit I’m jamming the most on that front. The track with Game and Chris Brown, Make the World Go Round, sounds slightly outta place, but should make a good follow up single to Hero (see vid down bottom). I’m a Nas fan so I could be biased, but so far overall I reckon Untitled is the shit. It’s grown folks music: mature and intelligent, with a conscience and a dope sound. Agree or disagree?

Oh and sorry for no album link, don’t wanna risk getting Shot Then shut, shut ‘em down, but it’s outta our hands if it ends up in the comments section ;)

Video: Jazmine Sullivan - “Need U Bad”

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Not sure how late I am on this song, but I only just heard it today when I watched the recently released video for it. The shit is real laidback, reminiscent of Lauryn Hill during the Miseducation era right down to the reggae-tinged beat. Doing some quick Googling, Jazmine Sullivan is originally from Philly and has been in the game for a few years now, working with Salaam Remi, Jack Splash, Missy Elliot (like on this track) and Floetry amongst others. If this song is anything to go by, I’ll definitely be keeping an ear out for her future stuff. Peep the vid below.
