DJ Nerdism: The Serato Boys on Juan Epstein

Serato sexy time love (Clean Edit)

Pete Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds invited the boys from Serato up to their podcast, Juan Epstein, this week to discuss Serato Scratch Live and its impact on DJ culture, what ensued was 40 minutes of straight-up DJ-nerdism and references to Flight Of The Conchords (much nicer than sheep jokes). Anyways, if you are a DJ and/or interested in DJ culture this episode is worth a listen, if you’re not then don’t! (this episode is the height of DJ-nerdom and probably wont make sense to you anyway)

Interesting interview… I don’t think vinyl will ever die completely but it is sad that young dudes getting into DJing don’t know what it was like digging for tunes, dealing with skipping records and carrying crates of records up stair cases.

Welcome to the age of the microwave DJ..

Im glad that carrying crates and skippy records are old news. thank the lord!! Go technology

  4. Glaciers of ice Says:

    ^^ totally agree, technology woohoo.

  5. Penny Hardwayz Says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for technology, and I love Serato but sometimes I wonder if all this technology makes it too easy. I’ve had club owners coming in to work asking to buy computer programs that mix by themselves, cos they’ve seen us mixing on laptops and don’t really understand that theres more to it than that, but if they ever invent a program that can beat mix, scratch, read a crowd and throw down a juggle every now and again, we could be redundant.

  6. Scrooge McDuck Says:

Although I started DJing in 2003. I didnt step outta my room to the clubs until serato came along. So does that make me a microwave DJ? probably. Although, I started on vinyl. Learnt the shit myself in my bedroom for a good few years…. Its out of it cause I feel sorry for those DJs who went straight to serato and never used vinyl….but laugh at them at the same time.

Basically turntables has extended it’s life through the digital era which most DJs should be happy about. If serato never came about, Microwave DJs would still exist in the form of CDJs

    ^^
Totally. And when that type of software comes along (i say WHEN not IF) then those DJ’s who play at most mainstream pubs/clubs will have to look for another job.

I think the way to future proof your career is to have a point of difference that keeps you in demand. Be that through maintaining a media or celebrity profile (ie; Clinton Sparks, DJ AM) creating your own original music or remixes or simply being amazingly talented and creative with your turntables (ie; A-Trak, DJ Craze etc..)

Its sad to say, but if your regular gig is spinning at The Loaded Hog (or any number of local Top 40 R&B spots) then your days are numbered brothas.

  8. Penny Hardwayz Says:

^true dat re CDJs, and no I wouldn’t call you a microwave DJ, you did your time on vinyl.

  9. Glaciers of ice Says:

The microwave DJ concept has always been around in some form or another, dudes used to hate on DJs using scratch records because it meant that you could bypass digging for samples. To me it reeks a little of older or established DJs coming up with an excuse to hate on the new jacks cos they feel threatened by them. Wack DJs existed before this technology and will continue to exist, this technology just made DJing more accessible, so there are more DJs around, common sense dictates that that means more wack DJs but also more dope DJs.

EWwww look at all my scratched up dusty records..Fuck off you old cunt.

^I agree, but when promoters or club owners book a guy who has been DJing for a couple of months ahead of a guy who is established and knows what he’s doing, purely because they can pay the young cat less, then I think the older dudes have some justification to hate.

  12. Scrooge McDuck Says:

thats true about the justified haterations. So they should feel a bit ripped off…
