“i like the one on the video better” - vol 3
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008Lost Boyz - Jeeps, Lex Coupes, Bimaz and Benz
Now that’s a mothafukken rap song. This song still kicks my ass, from the opening “MCAaaaaa” . The way the bassline drops on those words with the shot from the overhead camera angle. Too mean. So mean in fact a big fuck you has to go out to the powers that be who didn’t include this version on the album. This song is all about that beat - I put untold dudes onto the Lost Boyz strictly off the fact that this song went hard on the 12″ subs in their cars. Hardcase brada.
Juno sucks
Monday, April 21st, 2008I didn’t find this article overly funny, but I wholeheartedly support anything which points out how pretentious this film is. The overly verbose, bootleg Gilmour Girls-eque dialogue. The super indy soundtrack. The brandishing of obscure niche interests - black and white horror films ? GTFOH! Did anyone ride a fixed gear in this ? If they didn’t they should’ve. It thinks it’s that hip. Fuck this movie.

Monday, April 21st, 2008Bone Thugs N Harmony - East 1999
Don’t get it twisted, unlike the Aaliyah track in the last post - I DO like the album version of this song. I gradually warmed to the different beat, and to be honest it’s that one that springs to mind nowadays when I think of this song. However watching this video reminds me of how annoyed I was when dubbing this album off the bro. The melody is as sinister as they come, and I recall this joint being the one that really cemented this group for me. 1st of the month was for everyone, this shit was for the heads. No choruses, dark as fuck vid, Bizzy repping maoridom and rapping with a crow. Classic.

Friday, April 18th, 2008Aaliyah - At your best
Back in the pre-internet days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth and shit, my music collection was all music videos taped off TV. I’d tape stuff off the radio too, but for the less ‘commercially viable’ hip hop the only exposure it would get over here would be on the music video channels. Also with R&B, a lot of the radio edits would cut the bridges of songs that had rappers on them and have some bland harmonising instead of the verse. They probably still do it but I hardly listen to the radio anymore so I couldn’t tell ya.
Around this time I’d often encounter something I’ve noticed doesn’t occur anywhere near as frequently any more. I’d have a song I was stoked on which I’d taped off TV - l’d know all the words, dance moves, apparel worn by the artist etc. I’d then manage to get my hands on a copy of album by said artist, and be real stoked thinking of how I could finally play the song on an actual stereo with real speakers instead of the 19 inch TV. I’d finally be able to play the song in my bedroom at my leisure instead of having to wait till noone was home so I could bang out in the lounge and not get bummed out by mum or my siblings.
I’d throw the CD in, hit skip skip skip straight to the single and then ………. whaaaat ? “This isn’t the fucken song i know off the video!”. That shit would be soul destroying, as you’d come to the realisation that the song you fell in love with and copped the CD for was actually the mothafukken “dancefloor extended club remix” and all you have to play is the “Album version”. This was especially paralysing on songs which were actually ballads on the album yet the video/single they released was a remix for the clubs. Straight rude! Anyways I’m gonna go for the next couple days with my favourite music video cuts that are better than the album version. I’ll set it off with this Aaliyah number right here, I don’t care what anyone says, fuck the album version of this! - this version is still plenty mellow enuff, but it’s got a groove and none of the cheese of the album cut. Trust me.
Oh yeah, Kellz is a genius.
Polynesian Pathways

Paint it gold…
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008Don’t know how many Atmosphere fans there are out there, but this one has been pretty interesting for me. Atmosphere have an album coming out this month and to promote it they have created a series of youtube videos called “Paint it gold”. They have asked people to send in questions and they answer them each week. Most of the questions, acting and production value has been lame, but I thought this might be of interest to the artists out there. I would love to see a New Zealand artist do a similar thing.
People are using the internet to create a buzz for their forth-coming releases. There are so many different ways to do this; whether it’s the intentional leak of a record, emotional blogs, or what Atmosphere has done here.
Or you could go the traditional route and send your CD to magazines - Just don’t try anything too tricky.
