“i like the one on the video better” – vol 1
Aaliyah – At your best
Back in the pre-internet days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth and shit, my music collection was all music videos taped off TV. I’d tape stuff off the radio too, but for the less ‘commercially viable’ hip hop the only exposure it would get over here would be on the music video channels. Also with R&B, a lot of the radio edits would cut the bridges of songs that had rappers on them and have some bland harmonising instead of the verse. They probably still do it but I hardly listen to the radio anymore so I couldn’t tell ya.
Around this time I’d often encounter something I’ve noticed doesn’t occur anywhere near as frequently any more. I’d have a song I was stoked on which I’d taped off TV – l’d know all the words, dance moves, apparel worn by the artist etc. I’d then manage to get my hands on a copy of album by said artist, and be real stoked thinking of how I could finally play the song on an actual stereo with real speakers instead of the 19 inch TV. I’d finally be able to play the song in my bedroom at my leisure instead of having to wait till noone was home so I could bang out in the lounge and not get bummed out by mum or my siblings.
I’d throw the CD in, hit skip skip skip straight to the single and then ………. whaaaat ? “This isn’t the fucken song i know off the video!”. That shit would be soul destroying, as you’d come to the realisation that the song you fell in love with and copped the CD for was actually the mothafukken “dancefloor extended club remix” and all you have to play is the “Album version”. This was especially paralysing on songs which were actually ballads on the album yet the video/single they released was a remix for the clubs. Straight rude! Anyways I’m gonna go for the next couple days with my favourite music video cuts that are better than the album version. I’ll set it off with this Aaliyah number right here, I don’t care what anyone says, fuck the album version of this! – this version is still plenty mellow enuff, but it’s got a groove and none of the cheese of the album cut. Trust me.
Oh yeah, Kellz is a genius.

California Love (RMX) on Disc 1 – All Eyez On Me by 2Pac
No album cut has ever managed to disappoint me as much as that

I like the ‘california love rmx’ better. The video version of ‘I aint mad at cha’ is way better though, the clip’s 3rd verse is ill.

man aaliyah is cool as fuck – her + kelis = 2 coolest r’n'b chics..
..I think what version of a song you like best, depends a lot on what version you hear first

Mean idea. Mine would have to be Meth & Red How High… the one on The Show soundtrack is cool in its own right, but the smoothness of the video version is the one.
On a sorta related note, I used to hate learning songs from Rhythm Volume or the radio, back when I was young and unaware they were clean versions, only to buy the album, think I know all the words, try rap along and *fend* no good. E.g Warren G – Do You See
