When Collabos go bad

Sometimes talent plus more talent can just equal shit (theres so much wrong in this pic, peep Barkley in the Jordans and the worst uniform of all-time *smh). As I was talking with D Dot Dalle’ today, we realized Hip-Hop also has a long running history of bad connections that seemed good at the time. And like the under-achieving Rockets of whenever those guys were together, heres some not so classic cuts in my 10 Good On Paper, Bad On Wax Collabos…
10. Mobb Deep & 112 - Hey Luv
Aiight, this hardly makes the list because this was a shit idea to begin with. But both acts had a pretty solid track record up to that date and Mobb said they were going in a different direction after the Ballerina P fiasco. I felt I should at least give it a chance. Prodigy pashing in the clip made me regret that decision.
9. Slick Rick & Warren G - Behind Bars
This wasn’t that bad, but even Rick explained on The Show that this didn’t work. An obvious mismatch, just after the fact.
8. Common & The Neptunes - I Got A Right Ta
Badu-era Common over a Neptunes rock beat. Nuff said.
7. Eminem & Redman - Off The Wall
When I saw this in The Source’s Fat Tape section I was expecting an epic showdown from two renowned show-stealer’s. Instead I got some sub-par verses over shiteous production.
6. Jadakiss & Nate Dogg - Kiss Is Spittin’
On this one Jada took the Michael McDonald sample Warren G owned with Regulate, put Nate Dogg on it for some authenticity, and made it a big shitter by jacking the “I Keep Forgetting” hook. Matter of fact, check Kiss The Game Goodbye for a 101 on how make a shit collabo.
5. Juvenile, Jay-Z & Mannie Fresh - Ha Remix
Take the hottest song out and remix it with the hottest rapper and you got a no brainer hit right? In this case, hail no. This remains, hands down, Jigga’s worst verse ever. “We got big guns that go brrrrrrrat, brrrrrrrat, brrrrrrrat… where yo’ niggas at!?” Juvie and Fresh freaked it so much, Jay and his east coast sensibilities were just lost.
4. Boyz II Men & Puff Daddy - Cant Let It Go
Boyz II Men sold a gazillion albums off slow-mo love ballads, so it was obvious what they should do on their third record… DANCE! They employed the sure-shot hit-maker of the time, Sean “Puffy” Combs, who in-turn kicked off the demise of their career. Take that, take that.
3. Jay-Z, Rakim & Dr.Dre - The Watcher 2
Arguably the two best MC’s off all-time + greatest producer ever = shitty remake featuring Truth Hurts.
2. Nas, Ginuwine & Timbaland - You Owe Me
Nas and Timbo are top 5 in their respective fields, and should never work together again. “You Owe Me” is Nas’ most obvious commercial attempt, and was only used as diss ammunition by his foes. “Owe me back like 40 acres, to blacks!” really got the ladies wet.
1. Snoop Dogg & No Limit - take your pick
“Woof muthafucka, woof muthafuckaaaaaaaaaa”.

How about The Firm album? Mean as on paper… Nas, top 5 MC; AZ, a good sixth man; Nature, one of rap’s up & comers at the time; Foxy, the best female rapper at the time; Dr Dre, top 5 producer of all time… aaand what happens? Flop. I gotta admit I do like a few songs on that album though.
