flowin off the head
I know battling is considered rather un-cool by a lot of folk these days. At least here in NZ, but I still thought I’d take the opportunity to plug this shit to anyone who’s not up on it already. For the uninitiated, Jumpoff.tv has been putting on an event called the World Rap Championships for the last 2 years. Basically a 2 on 2 acapella freestyle battle between a bunch of teams from all over the place. In previous years the divisions only included a couple of US cities and London in the UK. This year they’ve expanded it to include more cities, which has meant the addition of a Melbourne division(though it features teams from all over Australia). All the teams basically compete to win their division which in turn means a trip to the US wherever the finals are held and subsequently world battling glory.
Now I watched a few of the US battles last year and was rather amused/amazed at the skill of some of the competitors. This year however I havent even watched their division as I found the Aussie division captured all my attention. Perhaps I can relate to the Oz sense of humour better or something, but I would recommend anyone who’s even slightly a fan of rap battles to check some of them out. Anything with Prime/Purpose and Anecdote/360 is pretty good for a laugh. Shot Oz.

how did rap battles die in this country?

^ A combination of the good rappers leaving the battle scene to focus on making music and 8 Mile inspiring any idiot to think they can enter a battle despite never rapping outside of their mate’s shed kicking ‘free flows’ about skunkies. Haha.
