Scribe’s ‘Rhymebook’ album out today
So Scribe’s second album is released today, I’ve had the good fortune of possessing a copy of it since last week and I’ve spent the last few days digesting it and I’m gonna share with you some of my thoughts before I jet to school (on the topic of 1-ups the young dude at my petrol station told me that he got the Scribe album about a month ago, LOL).
I have to admit I was preparing for the worst with this album after hearing the first two singles, ‘My Shit’ was half decent but I could not stand ‘F.R.E.S.H.’, and I thought that if this was the direction that Scribe was going with his album that I wasn’t going to like it. Fortunately those two singles are among the worst songs on the album and the remainder of the album takes a totally different direction that is more reminiscent of Scribe’s ‘Crusader’ album. Remember that first beat that P-Money shared with us on his shot then interview, the one that he said he’s been trying to get Scribe to rhyme on for three years or something, well the final track on the album, ‘The Return of the King’, features Scribe over a beat with the exact same sample source but different producer. I ain’t got time to talk about individual tracks this morning but I’m feeling ‘Don’t Look Back’, ‘Babygirl’, ‘A.W.O.L.’ featuring Ladi 6 and John Luafutu, ‘Let Me Ride’ featuring David Dallas, and ‘Be Alright’ featuring Talib Kweli. I’m not feeling ‘Say It Again’ so much, so I guess that’ll be the next single LOL. I know I said I don’t like giving ratings for music, mostly because they can be misinterpreted, and I caused a bit of a hoopla last time but I’ve changed my mind, the shit is convenient especially when I’m in a rush, this album is sitting on a 3.5 to 4 out of 5 for me at the moment. *LOL @ my indecisiveness
I was also expecting to be able to announce who had the best local hip hop album this year, Young Sid or Scribe, but I can’t, the albums are both really good and also deal with different subject matter that make them hard to compare. I guess it’s a win-win for hip hop fans in NZ because we’ve got two dope local hip hop albums within the space of one month
I’m expecting both these albums to be nominees in next years NZ Music awards for best hip hop album category…
Scribe… good cunt!
