These two flicks are shaping up to be 2007′s “Blair Witch-Snakes-on-a-Plane-World-Wide-Web-Created-Hype-Blockbusters” (yes, that is a technical movie term).

“BE KIND REWIND”

This one is directed by the visual mastermind Michael Gondry and stars Jack Black and Mos Def. In the ultra endearing premise, both leads work at a video store, and when Black gets bad headaches he decides to sabotage the power plant he suspects is causing them. His antics end up making his brain become magnitized and when he returns to the shop he inadvertently erases all the tapes. Their only customer is an elderly woman who has lost touch with reality and religiously rents the flicks, so not having the heart to tell her theyre gone, they decide to re-create them all with a handicam. They include The Lion King, Rush Hour, Ghostbusters, When We Were Kings, Back to the Future, Driving Miss Daisy, Robocop and Boyz In The Hood. The idea alone of Jack Black and Mos Def posing as Dough Boy and Tre has garunteed my ticket purchase.

“CLOVERFIELD”

Produced by JJ Abrams (brainchild of the tv show Lost) this one is a giant monster movie set in New York, and is said to be filmed totally on handi-cam (handi-cam is the new good cam!). Paramount Pictures has released little to no information on the film other than this trailer, which was shown at the beginning of Transformers in the US. And to add to the secret squirrelness, Cloverfield is not the real name of the film, there is no name! This website has random pictures you can flip around, and there are blogs set-up everywhere talking about a “prophet” named Ethan Haas. The monster is being reffered to as The Parasite, though there has been much speculation as to whether its a remake of everything from Godzilla to Voltron. I bet the guy that sat next to me at The Matrix Reloaded and yelled “Go Neo!” at one point, is salivating at this nerdness. Cant say Im not intrigued though.
